How to create and use WhatsApp templates
Follow our step by step guide on creating and using WhatsApp templates:
Tip: For more detail on what WhatsApp templates are, view our article here.
Step 1: Make a copy of the approval sheet. This is the Google doc where you'll write your templates. This should be shared with your account manager so they're able to edit it.
Step 2: For each template you want to submit, populate your approval sheet with the following (there's an example within the Google doc to follow):
-
Template name in lower case e.g. welcome_message
-
Template type
-
Template content, using variables for dynamic fields e.g. {{1}} - add as much content as possible as a variable - even if you don't plan to edit it now, the template will need to be resubmitted if you want to make any copy changes at all
-
Example content for each variable, including any links
- Button copy if using a call to action or survey template type
Tip: WhatsApp requires approximately two to three times more words than variables to approve a template.
Step 3: Once you are happy with your templates send your approval sheet to support@yourmovement.org
Step 4: Your account manager will submit your templates for approval. Templates can take up to 48 hours to be approved by Meta, so it's best to start with a bank of templates which you can reuse readily. You can submit new templates and remove old ones at any time.
Step 5: Use your templates to create WhatsApp campaigns. Once approved, your templates will be available in the Content section of the campaign builder, where you can select a template and edit the variable copy to fit your campaign:
